Studio Hanzashi

Studio Hanzashi began as a conceptual brand long before clay entered the practice. An evolving vessel that ultimately found its purpose through ceramics. The name “hanzashi,” meaning “half-plugged” in Japanese, refers to the imperfect, glitch-like effects created by partially connected audio cables. This idea of improvisation and in-between states informs the artist’s approach, where the pottery wheel becomes an instrument and each piece a recorded performance shaped by movement, time, and fire.

Rooted in a dialogue with the material, the work embraces unpredictability rather than control. The artist works in a “half-plugged” state, allowing space for both intention and the natural behavior of clay and glaze. This is most evident in the signature coastal glaze, where overlapping layers react in the kiln to form fluid, oceanic patterns, each piece a unique expression of process and material.
